Authentic Canon Battery (NB-2LH) vs a Counterfeit from Shenzhen, China

AUTHENTIC ONE (came with the Canon Rebel XT)

SOLD to me on Ebay by xin_vancouver (now known as "battbuddy" and now also known as "hk_warehouse_direct" AND now known as "69047480081" - that's 4 names in less than 1 year - perhaps the last one is his prison ID number)

Looks like a COUNTERFEIT

  • Note the sloppy printing
  • The font is different (Look at the "C")
  • The arrow is crooked
  • The ink is different

    Looks like a COUNTERFEIT

  • Look at where the number is stamped onto the battery and look at where it is in the real battery
  • Note the different fonts
  • Note how everything is crammed into the blue sticker
  • Note the spelling mistakes and missing French accents (USEINANDER not AUSEINANDER, A not Á, DEMONTEZ not DÉMONTEZ)
  • You can't see it in the photo but the blue sticker is a different shade of blue

I went and bought a real battery at Futureshop on January 15. Look at the differences.

Canon's anti-counterfeiting tactics includes the use of the special hologram. The new unique holograms show the word ‘Canon’ running horizontally in a number of bands, and in between the ‘ribbons’ users should see a helix design, also running horizontally, overprinted with the word ‘genuine’. The hologram has a colour-changing feature also. Upright, it should appear as an iridescent gold, but when tipped into a horizontal position, a bright, iridescent green. If this transition does not colour, Canon advises that the hologram is fake. The hologram on the battery from xin_vancouver does not turn green when tipped or at any other position. It is a fake.

Another look at the differences in printing.

A look at the back of the package shows other anomalies.

His auctions say that the battery is shipped from Hong Kong. They're actually being shipped from Shenzhen, Guangdong, China. Google the words "Guangdong" and "counterfeit" and see the results.

In Ebay Feedback, Mr. Zhou has accused me of trying to rip him off by refusing to return the counterfeit battery. On the contrary, I'm quite happy to return the battery as soon as he provides the following before I ship it: a refund of my entire purchase (battery and shipping), cost to ship it back to him, and an address to ship it to within Canada (Delivery confirmation). He has refused. The only address I have is one in Shenzhen, China. A Paypal dispute has been opened by me and since it hinges on proving that the item he sent me is a counterfeit, I can't ship it to him until I have Canon Canada verify that it's a fake.

I ask you this...why should I trust that somebody who sold me a counterfeit battery will refund my money after I've sent the illegal contraband back to him?

In the meantime, I have purchased an authentic battery from Futureshop. The counterfeit will never be put into my camera nor will it be charged. There are no guarantees that the fake was ever properly tested to comply with North American standards. I'm not risking damage to my camera or to my home.

Updated March 1, 2006. It would appear that neither Ebay nor PayPal takes counterfeiting very seriously. Good thing the other authorities do. Paypal required me to send the battery back before they would initiate a refund. So, with reluctance since I wanted to hand the battery over to testing authorities, I shipped the battery back on February 24th. It was only after PayPal got involved that I got an address in British Columbia for this con artist. I will keep you all updated when I can.

Updated August 29, 2006. Canon Canada contacted me earlier in the year and has received many complaints about Mr. Zhou and his infamous counterfeits. It also appears as if he has changed his Ebay name to "hk_warehouse_direct". This is his third Ebay name in less than 1 year. What legitimate business changes a name that many times??

Updated October 6, 2006. He has changed his name yet again. Now he is known as "69047480081". 4 names in one year. Who is he trying to hide from, eh?
